Beyond Realism: Still Life Artist Jun Sugimuraー Towards an Unreached Destination

As a young artist in Shiogama and Sendai, Sugimura strived to channel the deep essence and possibility of still life through his paintings. It was in this period that he established himself as a serious still life artist and earned the respect and admiration of the art world in Tokyo.

Sugimura reflected,“I have to create works that transcend realism and reveals its inner light.”

This special exhibition features the later works of Sugimura. He continued to create large still life works with enthusiasm until the last days of his life.

We invite you to experience this artwork that has become an invaluable and iconic part of this city’s fabric.

This exhibition made possible with the generous support from the City of Sendai.
