As part of the Shiogama Sugimura Jun Museum of Art’s annual Machi to Kioku to Eigakan Program which both celebrate and preserve the community’s collective memories and vibrant cultural heritage, we are excited to screen “Hand-Drawn: Documentary”, a feature-length independent film directed by Felicity MORELAND.

Making its first public screening in Japan, this documentary film features narratives and interviews from various artists as they take us behind the scenes and share with us their own produced animated works, styles, and creation methods. Moreso, this film puts the spotlight on hand-drawn animation style, showcasing its unique charm, aesthetic, and appeal, all while exploring its future amidst a changing and evolving industry. 

After the screening, we will host a talk featuring some of Japan’s contemporary and influential animation producers. Animation film producer and Shiogama City’s own MARUYAMA Masao, and animation film director KATABUCHI Sunao will both join us to discuss their experience with hand-drawn animation and talk about the future of Japan’s animation industry at large.
