For the ninth edition of this program, we are pleased to introduce two artists selected through an open call: painter Fukiko Tsurifune and contemporary artist Chiaki Orita.
Tsurifune’s paintings are based on the scenery of Shiogama and the surrounding area, with which she’s been familiar since childhood.
In her series of paintings, which showcase nostalgic landscapes brimming with emotion and weave together fantasy and contemporary life, Tsurifune presents a seemingly Pop-like depiction of Shiogama, yet reveals a latent image of the city and approaches the depths of the everyday.
Meanwhile, the series also realistically documents existing old buildings and scenery, capturing the details of history, climate, and the natural world with precision, while also depicting the hidden aura within. The events of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake strengthened her desire to catalog and preserve these ever-changing landscapes.
We hope that each visitor will have the opportunity to freely expand their own image of the “Region” while meditating on every aspect of the work and making various discoveries as if exploring it.
